Stuff.co.nz reports that a Nelson man has been fined $4,000 for installing an LPG powered fridge, in a motorhome, without a licence.

The owner of the motorhome noticed a bad smell coming from the refrigerator and this had made her feel ill and light-headed, so she called in a registered gasfitter to investigate. Upon inspection there were defects in the gasfitting work that were considered immediately dangerous to life. WorkSafe NZ was contacted and in turn they notified the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB).

The illegal installer was convicted and fined $4,000, with solicitor’s costs of $113 and court costs of $130.

Don’t take shortcuts when dealing with gas. Make sure whoever undertakes gas work for you is legally registered to do so. Rest assured, all Auckland Plumbers Group gas installations are undertaken by tradespeople authorised by the PGDB.
