Auckland Council has just reminded all residents to “flush your taps” before pouring drinking water from their household pipes.

Although the health risk is minimal, water that has stood in some plumbing fittings for several hours may potentially introduce minuscule amounts of metals. The Ministry of Health recommends that simply pouring a large glass of water each morning (use this on indoor plants) before filling your glass to drink is likely enough to remove any trace contamination that may have occurred. Auckland Council recommends this practice for both private and public water supplies.
