Dodgy plumbing work lands unprecedented fines and reparation for Shams Construction Works.
The New Zealand Herald reports that company director, Shamsher Ali, was sentenced at the Auckland District Court in April after he was found guilty of carrying out sanitary plumbing in two bathrooms at an Auckland suburban property, without the necessary registration or licence.
The Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board sought a $9000 fine, because of the scale of the offending and significant damage caused. Another $15,000 was ordered for reparation. This is a record judgement.
Tradespeople carrying out plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying need to be registered, as unauthorised work poses a significant health and safety risk and may not be covered by insurance.
Rest assured, all Auckland Plumbers Group tradespeople are authorised by the board.
The dodgy plumbing carried out by Shams Construction Works cost the homeowner $20,000 to rebuild the two bathrooms because of water damage and gases venting into the home, after the original toilet pipe was tiled over instead of disconnected.
