how to choose your hot water system

Shower steam
An important consideration with any hot water installation is the system’s energy rating. Many water heating appliances have an energy-rating label attached – the more stars it has, the more efficiently it runs.

There is no requirement for how energy-efficient appliances should be, but the stickers are mandatory. Manufacturers are, for the most part, responsible for marketing their products. Creating an efficient product will appeal to a larger audience, which is in the manufacturer’s best interest.

The initial decision you must make is whether to install an electric, gas or solar hot water system. The best choice for your home will depend on your priorities, such as where the installation location is in the house, the environmental impact of the system, and your desired running costs.

All installations are unique and offer different benefits to consider. While gas and solar are generally more expensive to install, they can provide a great return on investment, saving you on running costs in the long term

gas hot water systems

Thermann-26

For energy-conscious households, a gas hot water solution is a great choice.

  • Often cheaper to run
  • Gas is usually available 24/7
  • Smaller storage tank
  • Faster heat-recovery
  • Natural gas or LPG

They are often cheaper to run and are overall more environmentally friendly than electric solutions. Gas is usually available 24/7, so the systems generally use a smaller storage tank (the Rheem Stella does offer a larger 160-litre capacity). The leading difference with gas is the faster heat-recovery compared to an electric unit.

Continuous-flow hot water solutions, such as the Rinnai Infinity and Thermann ranges, only use gas on-demand, so there are no running costs to consider when they are not in use. For more demanding hot water use, you can couple two units together to provide a greater volume of hot water.

Gas models are almost always external units, freeing up valuable space inside your home when you convert. A natural gas supply is preferred by most for the cost; however, you can use bottled LPG gas. LPG costs more and requires monitoring to ensure that hot water is always available.

The flipside to these gas systems is that hot water installation costs are typically higher than electric solutions. However, you will likely see a return on investment with lower running costs.

All the leading brands, including Rheem, Rinnai, and Thermann, offer gas hot water solutions. Check out the fully-installed pricing for gas hot water cylinders and continuous flow units.

electric hot water cylinders

Rheem hot water cylinders
An electric hot water system offers a range of benefits:

  • Mains or low pressure
  • Large capacity
  • Under-bench models available

The design of a hot water cylinder hasn’t changed much over the years. An electrical element heats the water, storing the heated water inside a tank (cylinder); however, there have been many improvements to insulation, heating elements, and thermostats. We offer electric solutions from the leading brands, including Rheem, Rinnai, and Thermann.

Typically, if you can get power and water to a location, you can fit an electric hot water system almost anywhere.

Please be aware that if we are upgrading or installing a new cylinder, current building regulations require that a cylinder must sit within a tray with appropriate drainage. Like-for-like cylinder replacements are an exception i.e., same heating source (gas/electric), same capacity.

solar hot water

A solar system is an efficient way of reducing your ongoing costs.

  • ‘Tops up’ existing hot water cylinder
  • Draws energy from the sun
  • Environmentally friendly
  • No ongoing costs

Approximately 20% of the energy consumed in an average home is from the bathroom, kitchen, and laundry; water heating is the culprit.

Heating water uses a lot of energy. You are ultimately paying two costs when you use hot water – one for the energy required to heat the water and the other for the water used. A solar system is an efficient way of reducing your ongoing costs.

A typical solar system operates by ‘topping up’ the heat stored in a hot water cylinder. During the day, a solar system draws energy from the sun and passes water through a heat exchanger. The more sun there is, the more efficient the system is.

At night or on a very cloudy day, a backup heat source (gas or electric) switches over to ensure the water is ‘boosted’ to the temperature set on the thermostat.

When deciding on solar hot water, don’t just look at the installation price; consider how large the capacity needs to be, where the panels and cylinder will belong, and the type of ‘top-up’ system you want to use. Auckland Plumbers Group can help you make an informed decision – we have the answers. Call us today or request a quote.
